As a starting point, a resume (or 'curriculum vitae' or 'CV') is a summary of vital information about you. Its purpose is to showcase your accomplishments to the employer, so that they can assess whether you are an appropriate person for the job.
Your resume should include the following details:
- Personal Details - Name, Address, Telephone Numbers and E-mail Address (place of birth and age are optional)
- Career Objectives
- Summary of Employment (including Name of Employer, Position and Period of Employment)
- Summary of Educational History
- Current Professional Memberships
- Key Areas of Experience & Competencies (including technical and generic)
- Full Employment History (including responsibilities and achievements)
- Extra Curricular Activities and Achievements
- Referees
Further, a successful resume should present information that:
- Is relevant, concise and correct
- Conveys the right message to prospective employers
- Highlights your strengths and achievements
- Inspires confidence from the prospective employers
- Is a truthful representation of your abilities
- Encourages the reader to want to know more about you
