Our History

The Godfrey name has a long history in the Financial Services sector.

From the early 1900’s members of the Godfrey family were employed as Branch Managers of the English Scottish and Australian Bank, and were even known to have travelled on horse back to visit clients.

Subsequent generations of the Godfrey family joined the banking and insurance industries, establishing the family’s roots in the Wealth Management industry.

In the 1960’s Alan Godfrey introduced mortgage insurance to Australia, initiating the pioneering approach known to the Godfrey name.

His son, John Godfrey entered the financial sector in 1961 gaining experience in banking, stockbroking, accounting, investment banking and corporate-treasurership, with antecedent businesses to firms such as Merrill Lynch, Deloittes and ANZ bank.

In 1981 John joined Max Weston and established the financial advice firm Godfrey Weston.  The company prospered and through a series of mergers and acquisitions, it became known as Godfrey Pembroke and grew Australia wide, with over 150 advisers as Financial Consultants. Today Godfrey Pembroke has approximately $10 billion of funds under management on behalf of over 20,000 clients..

John Godfrey was the founding chair of the Australian Investment Planners Association - now the Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA).  John is a Life Member of the FPA and has represented the Association on a range of Government Committees.

Continuing the tradition in the Wealth Management Industry, John’s son, James Godfrey began his professional career in the financial advice business focusing on professional sports people and their careers post sport.  James also gained experience in funds management before moving into recruitment specialising in the Wealth Management Industry.

In 2005, James established his own recruitment firm Godfrey Group in partnership with John, which continues to reflect the family’s values, culture and service.  Over the following years, Godfrey Group found its niche as a trusted firm providing recruitment services to the Wealth Management Industry.
